EXPRESSION OF INTEREST - EDUCATIONAL TRIP TO CHINA 2025

Next year we are planning to offer an opportunity for our students to travel to China in September or October next year.

INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO US AT THIS POINT

	What:	Edventure Tours, the travel company that supports us with our overseas travel, have recently returned from a reconnaissance trip to China and have offered us the following programme: Price includes: Return International Flights with Air China, inclusive of taxes flying Auckland to Beijing / Beijing to Xian / Xian to Beijing / Beijing to Auckland 4 Nights in 3 Star Hotel in Beijing - Twin Share, inclusive of daily breakfast 3 Nights in 3 Star Hotel in Xi'an - Twin Share, inclusive of daily breakfast Local English Speaking Guides in Beijing and Xian All Private Transfers Beijing Activities listed in itinerary (Beihai Park, Qianmen Street, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Great Wall of China, Olympic Park Bird's Nest and Water Cube, Universal Studios Beijing) Xi'an Activities listed in itinerary (Xi'an City Wall, Everbright City, Terracotta Warriors, Tang Dynasty Show, Muslim Street) 4 x Lunches / 5 x Dinner's Travel Insurance
	Cost:	We have been given an indication of approximately $4100 for the experience. There would be additional costs for the bus to and from the airport (Whangarei to Auckland), spending money and tee-shirts/hoodies. It is our intention to share this with you now, which would give families more time to acquire the funds in order to make this opportunity possible. Early next year families will be asked to pay a deposit to secure their child’s place.
	Fundraising	At this stage we will not be pursuing any large group fundraising events. You would be most welcome to explore the options of forming a team of families to host fundraising options together here at school. And, of course we are more than happy to provide a letter from the school which would allow you to approach local businesses to fundraise on their premises i.e. Bunnings sausage sizzles, raffles etc
	Who:	There would be 2 or 3 teachers traveling and depending on the numbers of committed students, possibly a small number of full paying adults too. The more students who go, the lower the price for all. This trip is open to 2025 Y8 students only.
		For the trip to be viable we need at least 28 people. Expressions of interest can be emailed to Tiffany Littin. tlittin@kamoint.school.nz Close off date: December 16. Please include the student’s name and room number in your email. If we get enough interest there will be a meeting in early February.

Sports Awards Order of Events

Here is the order for Thursday evening. Please note that seats will not be allocated but there will be enough for the number of people who have returned their RSVP.

Students must wear full school uniform, including correct footwear and be seated by 5.50pm. No chewing gum, please.

All students invited will be recognised in some way for their contribution to sport this year. Some will receive certificates, some will receive trophies. They are all winners in our eyes.

Principal's Corner

On Friday evening, I had the pleasure of attending the graduation ceremony celebrating teachers who have completed two years in the profession. Given the sharp decline in the number of people entering the teaching field, it was a time to honor those who have committed to this career and are making a difference in the lives of the young people under their care. We congratulate our own Moana Phillips on becoming a fully registered teacher. It didn’t take long for us to recognize Moana’s talent when she was a student teacher with us a few years ago, and we count ourselves lucky that she chose to start her teaching career with Te Kamo Intermediate.

Last Wednesday, we had a panel of Northland Council employees join us for three question-and-answer sessions about their respective roles within the Council. The students were tasked with identifying the employees’ professions by asking only yes-or-no questions. We take this opportunity to thank Ryan Donaldson, from the MOE, and the seven Council employees for their time and for encouraging the students to work hard and develop a variety of skills to ensure they have choices in their future careers.

Tomorrow, our athletes who performed well in our school Athletic Sports will compete at the Whangarei Athletic Sports. We wish them all the best and look forward to plenty of TKIS top results!

Today, the permission letter was distributed to those invited to attend our Year 8 Graduation Dance. All details are included in the letter, including information about permissions, expectations, and payment. This is a fantastic evening where we celebrate the students’ two years with us before they transition to secondary school. On that note, some students have yet to enroll in high school. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of doing this as soon as possible.

A few days ago, Lisa Ferris, our Deputy Principal, shared a YouTube video and a post on our Facebook page about sharing children’s personal information without consent. I encourage you to watch this and remain mindful of what you post online.

We are growing increasingly concerned about two issues:
a) The amount of time students report spending on devices, and
b) The content they are posting.

Each week, we encounter students who are so tired they are incapable of learning until they’ve had a nap. When asked why they are tired, they often say they were gaming or engaging with various social media platforms all night.

Last week, one of our classes completed a survey about their use of digital devices. We were very concerned to learn how many students admitted to taking inappropriate photos of themselves and posting them on different platforms or sending them to friends. It is not uncommon for some students to spend 8+ hours a day on screens outside of school hours.

As mentioned in a previous update, we are making changes next year to reduce the amount of time students spend on devices as part of class programs. We encourage you to regularly monitor how much time your child(ren) spend on devices. Do you remove devices from your children after bedtime?

Over the next few weeks, we will recognize and celebrate the achievements of our students throughout the past year. If you haven’t yet been informed about team assemblies, you should hear more this week. Additionally, students receiving recognition at our Kapa Haka, Sports, and Academic/Cultural Prize Givings will be notified by the end of this week.

Prize Giving and Sports Awards

Kapa Haka

Kapa Haka at Hurupaki

On the 8th of November, Te Puia o Te Kamo took to the stage again as a participating roopu in Te Āhuareka, a local Kapa Haka festival held at Hurupaki School.

Again, our bracket was well received by all who attended and the ihi and wehi displayed by our performers was breathtaking. We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the organisers and the Hurupaki School community for being such wonderful hosts on the day.

Thanks also to Whaea Toni and Matua Anaru who oversaw the day for us, along with the whānau that attended in support of this kaupapa!

Life in a school is never dull and we constantly have so much to celebrate!

Four school records were broken during the recent athletic sports. Congratulations to Nevaeh Kairau (200m), Teddy Anderson (200m), Henare Pomare-White (200m) and Lecorez Mangu (High Jump). We look forward to seeing how they compete in the Whangarei Athletics Meet in a few weeks.

Congratulations to all of our students for not only the competitiveness but the great sportsmanship shown on the day.

Our second group of travellers return from Vanuatu tomorrow evening and looking at the photos shared so far, are having a great experience. Today they will be swimming in the Blue Lagoon with turtles. Yesterday they visited a local village and school, who we have had an affiliation with for many years.

As part of our financial literacy and careers unit, we have a number of speakers coming in to talk with the students next Wednesday. The Ministry of Education has been instrumental in supporting this day, for which we are very grateful. More on this after the event.

I do hear that the students are very much enjoying this concept and hope they are sharing some of their learning with you, over the dinner table.

Next week the permission letter will be distributed to Y8 students invited to the Graduation Dance. The date is December 12 and we always look forward to celebrating their time with us at Te Kamo Intermediate. I take this opportunity to thank the Parent Support Group for helping organise this event.

As you will be aware, the majority of the school were without internet and phone access for a good part of last week. We had planned for this and I have had a number of comments from both staff and students, that they enjoyed the chance to learn without the use of technology. Having recently returned from a Trauma Awareness Conference, where technology was also discussed, we will look at reducing the amount of time our students spend on devices from next year. This will be reflected in the activities planned for each concept.

Our phones are almost back to working throughout the school and hope we are completely up and running by the end of the week.

You will see in another notice, as part of our weekly updates, that the Parent Support Group has offered to run a second hand uniform sale. We will gratefully accept any clean uniform, unnamed and without stripes. We envisage this will be jackets, hats, sweatshirts and some formal school shirts. As the PE shirts are labelled, we won’t be accepting these items.

As part of our Motivate Monday last week, we recognised the following students for their Top of Team Awards.

Lastly, a reminder that as we approach summer, we encourage students to wear a sunhat and sunscreen to school each day.

Homestay families wanted

Next year Te Kamo Intermediate School is hoping to host a short term (4 weeks) group from Thailand.

We are looking for host families who are prepared to care for and support these students during their stay. If you like learning about other cultures, and have a spare room, this may be a great opportunity for you.

Homestay families receive a weekly payment to cover the costs.

Donate Your School Uniforms!

We're holding a second-hand uniform sale and would love your used, clean school uniforms that are no longer needed. Please bring them to the school hall on Monday 16 December or Tuesday 17 December, between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. All sale proceeds will go to the PTA to support our school. Please note: we cannot accept PE uniforms with names/initials or T-shirts with stripes. Thank you for helping!

Nau mai, haere mai, a warm welcome to Week Two, Term Four.

During the weekend I had the privilege of attending the Regional Kapa Haka Finals in Kaikohe. Our Roopu, Te Puia o Te Kamo represented their kura with pride and plenty of passion. Their performance was simply outstanding and there wasn’t a dry eye amongst the many Te Kamo Intermediate Staff and whānau members. We have the link on our school facebook page if you are interested in watching their performance.

While we didn’t place in the top five, we certainly scored highly in many domains of the competition.

I take this opportunity to sincerely thank Whaea Toni, Whaea Tracey, Matua Anaru, Matua Joby, Te Tuhi and all the whānau members who supported our roopu leading up to this weekend. The extra hours rehearsing during the holidays resulted in a very polished performance.

Yesterday we recognised our Top of Team Students who received their certificates at Motivate Monday, our weekly 15 minute assembly held at the start of the week.

Te Kokonga Tumuaki

A warm welcome to Term Four, where our young people will be continuing with the concept, ‘Financial Literacy/Careers’. With the support of the MOE, we are planning a careers week between November 18 - 22. We will have speakers from a number of different industries and budgeting services. Each team will also be organising speakers from different occupations.

A reminder to you that we are a sun smart kura. As Term 4 is a summer term, please make sure that your tamariki has the approved school bucket hat when outdoors. These are available from the uniform stockists locally.

During the last week of Term Three we held our school production, Bugsy Malone. Our aim, for each of our productions, is to involve as many people as possible and this year was no exception. If you came along, we hope you enjoyed it. The students very much rose to the occasion of performing in front of an audience and I acknowledge the many hours that went into preparing for this show.

Special thanks to our hugely talented Dance/Drama teacher, Katy Wild who not only directed, choreographed and produced the show but took a number of responsibilities that others would normally undertake.

Thanks also to the students who worked with Vaughan Witten on lighting and sound and to Ros Craw, Tracey Lawson and Graham Rickards for their work on props and staging and, to the parents and staff who assisted on the two evenings with hair, makeup and background support.

This coming weekend our roopu, Te Puia o Te Kamo, will be performing at Te Mana Kuratahi Kapa Haka regional finals in Kaikohe. They have worked exceptionally hard throughout the year, including during the holidays, to perfect their bracket of waiata and we wish them all the very best. If you are interested in attending, they will be taking to the stage at 0905 at Papa Hawaiiki Stadium, Lindvart Park, Kaikohe. Our thanks go to Whaea Toni, Whaea Tracey, Matua Anaru and our tutors, te whānau Hopa, for everything that they have done to get our kapa ready to stand at this event. We would also like to acknowledge the generosity of our Parent Support Group who have been able to assist with funding transport and accommodation costs.

A special thanks should also go to our very creative Tiffany Littin, who has made matching earrings for our girls to wear on the day.

This week students complete their summative data and before the end of October, this will be analysed, comparing data with the beginning of year data.

You are encouraged to make contact with your child’s class teacher later in the term if you would like to discuss the progress and attainments made this year. No formal student led conferences are planned for this term.

As we countdown until the end of the year, I want to remind our school community of the importance of regular attendance and being at school on time. While our whole school data shows a small improvement from last year we still have a long way to go to meet the government’s expectations.

If your child is in Y8 we hope you have enrolled them at High School for 2025.

Parking around Te Kamo Intermediate

We'd like to ask that parents and caregivers are aware of our neighbours when parking to collect your students.

We have had reports from neighbours in Croydon Place, Carlton Crescent and on Hailes Road where cars are parked illegally either on the grass verge or across driveways. In some cases, this has prevented our neighbours from accessing their property.

We'd like to remind you to obey all road rules when dropping off or collecting your precious young person. We'd also like to take the opportunity to point out that if you are dropping off in the school car park, the speed limit there is 5km/h.

Nau mai, haere mai ki Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori. We are having a wonderful week so far celebrating through various kemu (games) in classes. We wanted to recognise that one of the the best ways to keep learning and engaging with Te Reo Māori is through making language acquisition fun.

We have enjoyed various kemu so far, with more to come as we finish te wiki with a quiz for the sought after team points. Ask your tamariki to challenge you to a game of Mū Tōrere as there were fierce competitions taking place in classrooms yesterday! You can find an online version at this link.

To our amazing staff, your hard work, dedication, and seamless organisation ensured everything ran smoothly. Your commitment to our students’ growth, both on and off the field, is truly appreciated. A very special thanks to Liz who went well beyond the job description to ensure everything ran smoothly.

To the parents, your unwavering support and encouragement leading up to the Games and throughout the week were invaluable. Weekend trainings, numerous fund raising events, preparing meals and ensuring the students were well prepared to the week, were much appreciated.

Please make every effort to do so as soon as possible. High Schools rely on students enrolling to determine staffing.

A very successful week for our Science Fair participants last Wednesday. As you will see from a separate notice, our students did exceptionally well.

I felt exceptionally proud when our students were acknowledged for their achievements at the Regional Prize Giving last Wednesday. A very special thanks to Jo Rogan Gibson for her work in helping the students prepare their projects and marking the many we received at school. It was a huge job.

We are starting our week with a quick 15 minute get together on Monday morning. Yesterday was our second Monday and it was great to see students in their PE Uniform, ready to start the week. We announce the Team Points and this week recognised an overall Team Person of the Week.

Tomorrow we wish our school Cross Country team all the best at the Whangarei Championships. We have quite a large contingent competing and we know they will represent Te Kamo Intermediate with pride.

Next week our AIMS Teams have the opportunity to test their sporting skills against other teams throughout New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific. These students have worked hard throughout the winter season to prepare for next week and we wish them all the best. I’m told that each year gets bigger and numbers are higher than those who compete in the Commonwealth Games.

I thank all parents/managers/coaches who have worked hard to help the students get to these Games as it is not cheap. We hope you have as much fun as the students next week. The students are able to wear their AIMS Hoodies this week and the week after the Games.

Last week we had a fun competition between teams to see who the best Mini Putt Noughts and Crosses group were. It’s one thing to play noughts and crosses and quite another to accurately putt. Kowhai won the competition followed by Matai and Tawa. Kowhai then played a game against the teachers and after some effort, between both teams, Kowhai students were the winners! We also had a fun quiz competition and Tawa were the winners followed by Kowhai and in third place Rimu and Nikau scored the same points.

This week we have a boggle competition and each day we have a practice set of letters with the final on Friday.

Science Fair Award Winners, 2024

On Monday 26th August, 57 Te Kamo students went to the Central Northland Regional Science Fair. They represented the school and themselves well, and the high calibre of Science Fair Projects never ceases to surprise me.

On Wednesday evening 13 students were invited back to the Awards Ceremony. During the evening our kura received several Class Awards and Special Awards. Skylar Coates won a Premier Award and Toby Monteith won 2 Major Awards. Well done Toby as we have never won 2 of the Major awards before. Congratulations to all of our exhibitors and winners.

We had some great success on the Sports Field last week with both our Girls and Boys Rugby 7’s teams winning the Northland Champs. We are very proud of both teams. Thank you to the coaches, managers and parents who transported the students up to Kerikeri.

Our Rippa Rugby Team competed in a tournament in Rotorua, in preparation for the AIMS Games in a few weeks. I understand they played very well and placed a respectable 4th.

Our Kapa Haka Roopu is training hard for the Regional Competition to be held in Kaikohe on October 19. As numbers are restricted, the performing roopu will be selected during the next week.

Principal's Update

Thank you to those who attended the successful Vanuatu Trivial Pursuit Fundraiser on Saturday night. There were some impressive costumes - congratulations to the ‘Pineapples’ for taking out the top costume prize. It was a very competitive event with some interesting questions - who knew a soccer ball had 20 hexagons! Thanks also to those who won auctions for some great prizes. A special thanks to our helpers, including our students who are going on the trip to Vanuatu and their parents.

As the AIMS Games get closer our teams are increasing the number of practices they have each week and some have been lucky to secure extra games. Our netball team had a good win against Kerikeri High School yesterday and our Rugby 7’s team are playing in a tournament in Kerikeri today. Our Rippa Rugby Team are heading to Rotorua this afternoon for a tournament tomorrow. We wish all teams the best of luck.

Production Rehearsals are progressing well. I enjoy listening to the singing as the rehearsals have moved into the hall. We will let you know when tickets become available. I’m sure many of you will be familiar with Bugsy Malone:)

Next week is the annual Central Northland Science Fair. We have over 60 entries which is fantastic. If you have a spare half hour and you are interested in Science, please take the time to visit Forum North next week to view the many exhibitions.

Tomorrow we are holding our annual Mathematics Speed Gun competition where the best student from each team and year level competes against their peers for top Speed Gunner of the year. We are encouraged by the increase in basic fact recall and speed in which students can record their answers. Good basic fact knowledge underpins so much within mathematics. Having viewed the revised draft mathematics curriculum, the knowledge and skills are attainable with a determined attitude to succeed and some explicit teaching.

I trust you are enjoying the Olympic Games. I am consistently impressed by the remarkable dedication and commitment exhibited by these athletes; their achievements are truly extraordinary.

On the subject of sports, we are pleased to report the return of our team from the Sports Camp at Totara Springs last week. The team excelled by winning six sports, securing runner-up positions in two, and achieving an overall fifth place. Our sincere gratitude goes to our dedicated teachers, Tahi Boaz and Felicity Anson, whose efforts were instrumental in providing a memorable experience for our students. We also extend our thanks to the parents who accompanied the KIS team; your support is greatly valued.

Tonight, our top Mathex teams will be competing in the Regional Finals at WBHS. We anticipate sharing their achievements with you in the coming days.

Tomorrow evening, we will host our annual Open Night, welcoming prospective Year 6 students and their families. Selected classrooms, including our STEAM classes, will be open from 5:30 to 6:30 PM. This event would not be possible without the support of our students, who serve as excellent ambassadors for our school. We appreciate their participation as guides, assisting with tours, or actively engaging with visitors about their learning experiences.

Finally, I am encouraged to see a reduction in the number of students arriving late to school, though there remains room for improvement. Many latecomers report having 'slept in.' Setting an earlier alarm could make a significant difference, enabling students to arrive on time and start their day prepared.

A warm welcome to Term Three. We look forward to meeting up with as many of you as possible during the next few days as you attend the student led conferences. If, for some reason, you are unable to attend and would like to meet up with the classroom teacher, please do take the time to email them and arrange an alternative time/day.

Attendance:

While there has been some improvement in regular attendance we would like to improve this substantially. Last term we had 51% attend more than 90%. That figure doesn’t make for great reading. The next bracket (between 80 -90%) is 25%. Combining these figures we have 76% attending 80% and over.

The Senior Leadership Team has noticed an increase in the number of students late to school. We have 60% of students regularly on time in class. We need your support in working alongside us and your child/ren to have them at school and well ready for the day by 8:40. School officially starts at 8:45 and as far as we are aware, only one bus is regularly late. Sleeping in has been a regular excuse. This is one time we would be happy for students to be using their mobile devices - setting an alarm:)

Last term we had a number of students being dropped off and then making their way to Kamo (McDonalds or the local diary are favourite stops). We will monitor this but hope you can also support us by knowing what your child/ren are doing before school starts.

Agrikids

During the holidays our Agrikids team competed in the national competition and placed a respectable 5th. It was great to be able to support the team, parents and Jo Grant in Hamilton for this event. The boys can be very proud of themselves. Dylan Booth, Dylan Ivey, Olsyn Yearbury represented the school with pride, confidence and competence.

Yesterday was one of the most memorable days of our school year to date. We started with a hautapu, before dawn, recognising those who have passed during the past twelve months. Later in the day each team displayed their interpretation of the allocated stars around Matariki. I’m sure those who attended will agree that the displays were outstanding. The celebrations concluded with a showcase of our Kapa Haka Roopu and some of our talented students dancing and singing.

I would like to acknowledge our young people and staff for the time and effort they put into making this day a very special celebration. Thanks to Toni and Anaru Kaiwai for coordinating the festivities.

We look forward to seeing a number of you tomorrow evening when we hold our annual Mathex competition. Year 7 students need to be at school by 5:45pm, ready for a 6:00pm start and Year 8 students at 6:45pm ready for a 7:00pm start.

Celebrate the rising of the New Year

All classes and learning areas are currently putting the finishing touches on interactive displays for our celebration of learning for Matariki. All students have been learning about all of the whetū in the cluster, but with a special focus on a specific whetū for the display competition. The entire school will vote on these displays.

You are most welcome to join us for our Matariki Festival on Monday July 1st from 11am. The displays are open to whānau from 1100am - 1200pm. We will have fundraising kai stalls from 12pm to 1:15pm outside the Hall and Library. You will also be able to stay for a performance/concert from 1pm to 2:30pm in the school hall.

Thank you to all of our whānau for trusting us to look after your tamariki in the recent power outage. We reverted quickly to books, pens and outdoor activities. We appreciate your patience if you did decide to collect your young people.

This event highlighted a number of people who may have changed their contact information. Therefore, a timely reminder, if you have had a change of telephone number or address, please email the new details to: kisadmin@kamoint.school.nz so that we can update our records.

With the nationwide ongoing teacher shortage, we appreciate your support if your child has been asked to learn from home over the last few weeks. We try as much as we can to have an adult teaching each class but this is not always possible given the current climate.

Next Wednesday (July 3) we are looking forward to holding our annual Mathex Competition. You are welcome to attend and support your child, if they are competing. We always like to have a parents team so please let us know on Wednesday evening if you are keen to participate.

A polite reminder that phones are banned from school. If a child needs to bring a phone to school, they must hand it in to their teacher on arrival and it can be collected at the end of the day.

The Mighty Walk

I start with a huge thank you to all who supported our Mighty Walk last week. It was great to see so many whanau members come along and walk a few laps with their child and/or help out with selling food or cooking on the bbq.

Special thanks goes to our wonderful Parent Support Group who were instrumental in getting sponsorship for the event, organising the food and managing the fundraising portal. I am very grateful for your support.

We hope by the end of the week we can inform everyone on the amount raised and our top prize winners. We are very proud of the students for managing themselves so well and enjoying the spirt of the day. Many new friendships have been formed.

The Mighty Walk

At this stage we are all go for Thursday. The current weather forecast is for a few showers, which we can cope with. Should we need to postpone, our save day is Thursday 30/5.

While most students will come to school and bus down to Kensington, we expect a few will want to compete for prizes, one of which includes walking the furtherest distance. The official start time will be 8:00am through to 2:00pm. Students are welcome to be at Kensington from 745. In the interest of safety, please do not drop students off before this time.

Unless parents are collecting their child from the park, or the teacher has written information about walking home from Kensington, all students will return to school shortly after 2:00pm.

Students are welcome to wear their PE gear to and from school tomorrow. I suggest they all bring a shower proof coat and/or school jacket as it may be cold. Suitable footwear for long distance walking is a must!

School lunches will be delivered to Kensington however there will a variety of food for sale from 8:30am. Students are encouraged to bring a few dollars to enjoy some treats. e.g sausage sizzle, donuts etc. Please also ensure students bring a water bottle (filled with water).

If you are able to support us in any way, please come on down to the stadium. We will welcome in the kitchen, on the bbq, helping clean up and perhaps walking a few laps with the students!

WIS KIS Speedgun challenge

Recently, ten of Kamo Intermediates swiftest mathematicians were invited to compete against Whangarei Intermediate in a display of numeracy speed and knowledge.

The event was held in front of an enthusiatic crowd in the Whangarei Intermediate Hall.

At the conclusion of the contest, it was found that the Kamo kids had prevailed, and they were successful in the first of many WIS KIS challenges this year.

Special congratulations go to Oscar Woolford from Room 4, who was the overall winner.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Your children in school years 6, 7, 8 & 9 (ages 10 -14 years old), are invited to the Rock Solid's Mega Pizza Party on Tuesday 14th May. The event features games, prizes, and lots of pizza. We also offer weekly programmes that teach a balanced lifestyle and provide fun learning experiences. The club is open to all Year 6-9 children (ages 10 -14), and we will have plenty of adult leaders to supervise them. Fully Supervised for Maximum Enjoyment!!!!!! The cost is $2 which covers everything. Our full-time staff has many years of experience working with intermediate-age youth and running Rock Solid clubs, camps, and events in Northland since 1992.

We believe in Family and Community values and teach a balanced lifestyle. It encourages young people to develop in physical, mental, social and spiritual dimensions. We have a Christian basis to our programme but we do not push religion down kids' throats. We teach young people to be responsible for their own choices. Rock Solid is not a church, but local churches help out with the running of our programmes.

What it boils down to is heaps of fun, plus a chance to learn life skills and discuss issues in a friendly atmosphere.

The Mighty Walk

Thank you to those who have registered and raised some money. Currently we have 111 students who have raised just over $10,000. With a roll of just over 800, it would be great if each student could register and raise $10 for their school.

Monies raised will go towards fitting out our new PE Shed and curriculum resources. All students benefit.

End of Term One Messages

We are now only a few days away from the end of the first term. Last week's camps for Nīkau and Kauri were a huge success, and Rimu, Tawa and some of Kōwhai are away currently. Unfortunately we had to make the decision to postpone two camps due to incoming weather and hope to make new/alternative plans for those classes soon. Three classes in Mataī are off to Lonsdale in the first week of next term. Wonderful memories are made during these experiences and we thank all involved in making camp a success - staff, parents/whānau and most importantly, our young people.

Next term we will be holding our main fundraiser for the year - The Mighty Walk. This is a fun, inclusive day where the whole school comes together to help raise funds for KIS. Funds raised in the past have been put towards our amazing sports turf and sport equipment. Please have a look at the information in today's Recent Updates and get your child started on the fundraising page. Our Parent Support group have arranged for some amazing prizes for our participants and are putting in a tremendous amount of time to make this day a huge success - thank you to all those involved and thanks in advance to all of our families/whānau for supporting us with this day.

We cannot speak highly enough of Rob Cope and his Cyber Safety knowledge. Rob is back in Whangarei on the 21st of May with a very informative, open and often confronting session for parents. This is something that we recommend to all of our mums and dads. Information about the event is in today's updates. Please get in quick so you don't miss out.

Lastly, but most importantly, we would like to wish all of our families / whānau a great holiday. We appreciate all of the support that is offered and thank all who have engaged well with us throughout the term.

The Ministry of Education and Te Kamo Intermediate are currently working together on the planned implementation of a zone for our school/kura.

We are now entering the consultation stage. All information, including maps, relating to this proposed zone can be found on our website by following this link.

The Ministry of Education would like feedback by way of a survey, which can be found in the above link. Consultation closes on May 13, 2024.

Please note, the proposed school zone is not the same as our current bus zone. The bus zone will not change when the school zone is implemented.

Next term we will be holding our major fundraiser for the year, The Mighty Walk. Last year we raised nearly $30,000 which has been put towards sports equipment for the Astroturf. This year our focus is on raising funds for new sports uniforms and sports cages for the new PE shed and literacy resources.

The Mighty Walk will take place Thursday 23 May at Whangarei Athletics in Kensington and fundraising will start in a few weeks. The Parent Support Group will need help organising this event before and on the day. More information next week.

Today we host the team from Voices of Hope and Year 8 students will be attending. The team uses a “storytelling platform to support and bring a better understanding of mental health challenges, promoting help-seeking behaviours and useful resources, and ultimately spread hope.” Please take the time to talk with your child this evening about their learnings from today’s presentation.

With Camp coming up in a few weeks, I want to thank those of you who have offered to support the school by helping at Camp and/or transporting to and from the various venues. Without this support, Camp simply would not take place. Thanks also to those who have financially contributed towards the costs associated with Camp. We see a lot of growth in your students after they return from their camp experience; we are hearing that some students have never been away from home before so this in itself is a test of resilience. There will be lots of team building activities and hopefully experiences that are new for the students. You can support us by ensuring all students are well prepared.

A group I would like to publicly acknowledge is our Parent Support Group. Over the last six years they have raised well over $100,000 with students and staff benefiting from the purchasing of resources. E.g sports uniforms, sports equipment, contributing to the astroturf, class resources, library resources.

We held a Parent Support Group meeting last week and unfortunately only a few parents came along. Unless we get buy-in from more supporters, the group may well fold. There will be an AGM in the coming weeks and we encourage people to come along. The Group is in the process of organising our annual Mighty Walk and we will need plenty of volunteers to help on the day. Watch this space for more information.

Another group I want to acknowledge is our wonderful staff. Every staff member has the best interests of our young people at heart. Students that achieve well are those who have the full support from whanau and keep in regular contact with the class teacher. We take our jobs very seriously and work towards supporting the students through those young adolescent years. Our Graduate Profile has a number of skills that we rate highly in helping young people develop into well rounded individuals. This document can be accessed through our website.

Thank you to parents and community members who have been working with the students through the selection process of our winter sports and AIMS teams. We hope to name the teams early next week. There are some tough decisions to make as we have a number of very talented young athletes.

Lastly, there is a legal obligation to send your children to school. Disappointingly we have 108 students who currently have less than 80% attendance. PLEASE do your best to ensure your child attends school and if we can help in any way, let us know.

Road Safety - Bikes, Scooters, Walkers and Crossings

Kia ora Parents/Whānau

Crossings, bikes, scooters and walkers - All have risks for our young people.

Walkers - There is a rise in the number of young people with their faces seemingly glued to their phones once they leave school. Often, this means that they are not aware of their surroundings, which creates high risk situations when they are crossing roads and driveways. We remind students to put phones away, however your support with this would be appreciated. Please support your child to leave their phone at home. Messages can be sent to the office if you need to get in touch with your child to change after school plans.

Bikes & Scooters - We have noticed a number of our students leaving school with bikes and scooters without helmets. Even when reminded, helmets are not used.

It is our understanding that NZ legislation states that 'A person must not ride, or be carried on, a bicycle on a road unless the person is wearing a safety helmet of an approved standard that is securely fastened'.

If your child rides their bike to and from school, please ensure they have a correctly fitting safety helmet and that they wear it.

Although there is no legislation for wearing helmets on scooters, we would prefer all scooter users to wear a helmet. Head impacts can cause serious long term injury.

Scooters - This week we have had a number of calls from concerned drivers letting us know about some of our students who are scootering down Kamo Road, scootering across the road and sometimes weaving in and out of traffic. If your child scooters home, please support them in making wise decisions.

Pedestrian Crossings - We have a pedestrian crossing on Kamo Road. It is well marked and easy for traffic to see those waiting to cross. Children are to cross on the crossing - not beside it. For those who need to cross Kamo Road, this is our preferred crossing. Alternatives are walking down Kamo Rd and crossing at the lights at Whau Valley, or walking into Te Kamo village and crossing at the main lights north of the shops.

The roads around our school are busy, especially before and after school. It doesn't take much for accidents to happen.

I start by congratulating all those who took part in the Beach to Basin on Sunday. Kamo Intermediate were well represented and we’ve seen some great photos on our Facebook page. Well done KIS kids, staff and whānau community. As a kura, we were also well represented by the performers on the Pasifika Fusion stage at Hihiaua Park on Saturday. What great weather and sapasui!

Tomorrow, weather permitting, we have a number of students taking part in a doubles tennis tournament at Thomas Neal Memorial Park, and wish them all the best for their games.

We are calling for students interested in football, rugby sevens and girls rugby to register their interest this week. Once we have ascertained interest we will start trials. Netball and hockey trials continue and we will work on naming those teams as soon as possible.

Thank you to all staff and parents who have given up their time to work with our young people in the hope of realising their sporting dreams.

We are halfway through the term and I’m taking this opportunity to ask parents/caregivers to have a chat with their young ones about making the most of their time at school. We offer many opportunities for our students. As we as adults know, these years at school go by all too quickly.

We do have a Code of Conduct and a number of students are struggling to meet our key expectation and value of RESPECT.

There is a global teacher shortage and we ourselves have been affected. As you may have read in the local media, the first year teacher training programme has been cancelled this year due to a shortage of numbers. This is of great concern for the future.

If students are unable to regulate their behaviour, we may need to meet with you to discuss strategies and solutions to support their education at Kamo Intermediate.

Today staff met to refine planning for school camps, taking place during the last two weeks of term. Thank you very much to parents who have offered to assist. It is greatly appreciated. During the next week some parents may receive a call from either the classroom teacher, Team Leader or member of the Senior Leadership Team discussing options for Camp. We are looking at offering a day of activities for students who may have trouble coping with the expectations of Camp.

Last week we received confirmation from the Ministry of Education that our school name could be changed. Moving forward Kamo Intermediate will now become Te Kamo Intermediate. Over time changes in uniform, signage etc will take effect.

A reminder that, as per the government mandate, student’s phones are to be away for the day, meaning phones either do not come with the student to school (recommended), or are switched off and handed to the class teacher when the student arrives at school.

These rules are designed to ensure that the learning of all students is maximised, while minimising any potential for distraction and cyber-bullying.

If a parent or caregiver needs to contact their child urgently during the day, they should call the office. Parents and caregivers might also like to talk to their child about ways to manage any concerns about being off their phones for the day.

In order for this phone rule to be effective and to not disrupt our learning programmes we ask parents/ caregivers to speak to their child about these rules and reinforce the expectations of the school.

We have been lucky to enjoy some beautiful sunny days making it enjoyable for our students to participate in tabloids, tug-o-war for lunchtime sports and outdoor activities. Sunhats are very much encouraged along with students wearing sunscreen.

We are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Thursday. Thanks to those who have already made appointments. If you are unable to attend this week, please take the time to email the class teacher and suggest another time you could come in to meet with them. Most students have settled well into their class and this is an opportunity for you to ask questions of the teachers, discuss some early goal setting and hear about upcoming events and programmes at school.

With a roll of over 800 we are working hard at encouraging students to do the right thing. RESPECT is our key value and we talk about Respect for Self, Others and the Environment. Every person at Kamo Intermediate has a right to feel safe and comfortable in our learning environment. A few students have started to test some boundaries and we will work alongside them, and you, to help them mature into fine young citizens that we can all be proud of.

Today we welcome Joby Hopa into our school. Joby will be working alongside our Kapa Haka Roopu, something we are very excited about given his success and commitment to other local groups.

Our 2024-2026 Strategic Plan has been uploaded to our website. Our strategic initiatives include:

Increase community partnership, connections and engagement
Students learn through meaningful and authentic contexts
Well being - “ Think positive to stay focussed”.

Our Annual Goals centre around mathematics and oral language.

A few reminders for everyone:

School starts at 8:45. Please make every effort to have your child at school before then so they start the day off well. We are aware some buses are running a little late at the moment but hope this will improve.
Bike safety. Students must wear a well fitted helmet to ride a bike to and from school. Cyclists wearing helmets came into law in 1994. Please support us by ensuring students are wearing their helmets when leaving home in the morning.
You are welcome to attend the school swimming sports on Friday 16 Feb. Venue: Kamo High School. Start time: 12:00pm.
Each morning the school has daily notices which classes talk through. This is where students find out about opportunities to be involved in. Encourage your child to listen to the notices and get involved in some of our many opportunities at Kamo Intermediate School.

Bus Routes & Ticket Price Change

Bus routes - Information about all of our buses can be found on our website under School Information. The website link is here as well.

From time to time buses may be late or not operate due to driver illness. When this happens, we add a notification to our Facebook page. We also endeavour to contact parents via email. This is not always possible if we receive late information from the bus company.

The red bus tickets are now $25 and can be purchased from the office. Green bus ticket prices remain at $25 and are purchased from the bus driver. Please check the website to see which ticket your child needs.
